Hi All,

I just joined after a friend (Sandyk), sent me an e-mail containing a quotation from this forum. There seems to be a fair amount of good information here and I also felt that if Sandyk was acceptable, then even I might have a chance to mingle with decent people as well!

I live near Seattle in Washington State and have been messing around with Audio for nearly 40 years. I'm very much interested in DIY, as much from curiousity as frugality and would love to eventually have a totally handbuilt system (that actually sounds really good.

Hopefully I'll be able to participate and maybe even make a worthwhile contribution.

Best Regards,
Terry Olson

Hi Terry
Welcome aboard.
I feel sure that many of our regular readers will be interested in hearing of some of the happenings at the Pacific Northwest Audio Society,
where Terry was heavily involved until some recent health problems. Those guys are more into listening, but they also have quite a bit of technical expertise among their members, and hold regular meetings with high profile guests and equipment.
Regards
Alex

P.S.
You can blame Terry for introducing me to the LG BluRay writers, quite a few years back now, in DIY Audio.
I was very impressed by a high resolution medical type image of a burned BluRay disc, and the precision of it's burns.

Hi Terry,

Have you constructed many projects yourself ?

I have built three pairs of speakers so far, a DAC - i need to get the clock circuit working, and i am currently finalising my power amplfier.

Do you purchase any electronics magazines - Elektor usually had amplifiers that could be built.

Regards,

Shadders.

Shadders

Silicon Chip magazine has published quite a few DIY amplifier designs. I think one of them may have also appeared in Everyday Practical Electronics, since S.C. designs started featuring there in the last couple of years.

Hi SandyK,

Thanks - i examined the website - it is good to see enthusiasm in the audio area.

My self build speakers were from Hifi News in the 90's, but the DAC and Power Amplifier are my own design.

I would like to see DIY builds reviewed - there does seem to be an approach where people think that DIY cannot reach the same capability as production systems - perhaps a DBT of an Elektor amplifier and an equivalent manufactured system would be a good test.

Regards,

Shadders.

Hi Shadders

Why not post some internal and external photos of your DAC and Power amplifier in the DIY section, along with a brief technical overview ?
DIY builds by experiences hobbyists and designers have the potential to outperform most affordable production systems, as the only "Bean Counter" watching you is likely to be SWMBO.

Alex
