Go on, be bold. Get a panel of 'critic' readers, hopefully ones who promise to try to keep an open mind. Select some great components from the last fifty years, demo them against some of the best new stuff.Ask yourselves, is new better, or just dsifferent? I'd be fascinated.
Some possibilities, Quad 57s, Spendor BC1s, Krell KSA 50, Apogee Scintillas (I wish!), Sugano Koetsu, Early Linn LP12.Early Meridian CD player (508?)Goldmund Reference Record player.
New: Agostino amp, any Magico you like, new Koetsu Urushi, latest Linn,Continum deck good streaming equipment.
It would be hard work, and complex. But it would also be fascinating (well, it would be to me!).

Brilliant idea paskinn! Although I would replace "a panel of critic readers" with a selection of respected audio reviewers.

Absolutely....the wider you open the window, the more the muck flies in.

Oh yes, or the slightly more domestically friendly Stella EM

Surely with Critic's good Naim connections it should be possible to get these for review ?

HMMM............

I think we have secured the Focal Stella Utopia EM for the vol 7 no 2 issue provided that they make it up my staircase to the listening room

My room has been checked out as acoustically suitable and has a good enough system to drive them !

The variable magnet power appears to work differently to that on the Grande Utopia and this we hope to explore with some interest

It also has very comprehensive user install adjustment which fine tuning for audio system and location can significantly enhance the value proposition.

Also if you swap out gear, the speaker may be rebalanced for the changes.

My proposals here below , nearly all items missing from Martin reviews
Most of these are very expensive , I know , but it is interesting at least to see the measurements and to know
about the sonic performance achieved by their peculiar design and technology.
P.S. 1 : It would nice to put a list of item proposed for review on the website , in a way that
each subscriber can access by password , make proposals , and vote e.g. for 3 items each month , then those
items that get highest vote are reviewed.
P.S.2 : Imho it would be very interesting to measure the amplifiers with transient signals ( eg tone bursts ) and connected
to a loudspeaker ( to see the effect of reactive load and back e.m.f from woofers on distortion , crossover transition in class AB amps , and stability )

Amplifiers
All missing from Colloms Performance Listing
In case a manufacturer has both classA and classAB design in the top line ( e.g. Accuphase ; Pass ; Gryphon ; Musical Fidelity etc..)
a direct comparison would be very interesting
(only power amplifiers listed , but imho it would be always better to test the pre+power combo )

Unfortunately both your first choices, Spectral and Rockport, are not currently available in the UK

( The Rockport website is nice to look at though ! )

I'm working on getting the Kef LS50s ASAP (possibly the next issue). They did sound very interesting in Munich last year, and seem to share many of the Blade's strengths at a much lower price.

I'll try and get hold of a Vivid Giya too. I did review the original Giya (now the G1) back in 2008. A fine speaker inmost respects, as is often the case, it had rather too much bass in my 4.3x2.6x5.5m room, so I'll try and get one of the smaller Giyas now they've been developed

Most of these look the same. Floor standers, boat back, glossy, ribbed carcass etc.

Hi Martin,
What about a review of a modified Technics SL-1200/1210 perhaps by KAB.
Mr. Kevin A.Barrett of stroboscope fame invited many turntable manufacturers
to bring their turntable over to his lab for comparison. No takers.
Ditto for all the so-called Hi Fi mags to review it.
This remarkable turntable cost $479. FIFTY YEARS AGO!!! No much more when it was
discontinued last year. It should have cost at least $5,000. in today's dollars.
Besides the listening tests please check out its measurements. Shocking results.

Some classic revisits would be welcome. Nice to read about how some of the older components fair when used
with modern speakers etc. I'm talking about 10 to 30 year old kit if possible. This might also help to re-focus the performance listings too.

You can get new Rockport speakers in the UK.....try Unique Audio up near Watford. And they use Rockport speakers and record decks themselves. Mik, the owner, has been dealing with Andy Payor for at least twenty years. Even has a collection of Rockport decks, and probably knows more about them than anyone else in Europe. You can't buy the decks anymore, sadly. No longer made (although a handful of very high=spec 'Series Threes' were produced to special order last year. All sold) The guy who designed much of the Rockport decks for Andy Payor died last year. So that really is that.An article would be well worthwhile as the Rockport decks were probably the most 'perfectionist' bit of audio ever made; they never made any commercial sense, not least because even at their incredibly high prices, there was no room for a dealer margin! And this was one case (the only one?) where talk of 'Nasa Scientists' and so on was really true.
I could never have afforded one, but I'm glad they existed. Splendid, commercially daft, obsessive, and great...
