I remember reading an interview in Q, many years ago, where he explained that he'd grown up listening to, and being obsessed by, what he called "motorcycle death songs" - Leader Of The Pack, etc - and determined that he would write the Biggest, Baddest Motorcycle Death Song ever, such that no-one would ever need to write another. Seems to have done the trick!

If you don't go over the top, he's quoted here as asking, how can you see what's on the other side?

It was long ago and it was far away and it was so much better than it is today.
