Has anyone had success in using a ‘passive pre-amp’ in between a Naim source such as the NDX2 and one of their power amps NAP 300?
I have tried a few different active pre-amps in my system, including the NAC 282 and they didn’t do much for me.

So I thought I’d ask about your experiences with transformer based passives such as the Townshend Audio Allegri or Music First Audio and the Icon4 currently reviewed in ‘Critic’.

I would normally try before I buy, but my local dealer doesn’t stock any of the passive pre’s listed above.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I tried a Fidelity Research passive pre with a Naim power amp, I think a 250, some while ago. Not a successful experiment.

Martin Colloms and Jon Honeyball have used the Allegri + with great success in Naim systems

When I get the chance I have one to play with and will be using it with NAP 135 amps

I recall Martin mention the Townshend at one of the shows, I am interested to know if the signal from say a NDX2 makes it through to the NAP 300 intact?

Having tried a NDX2 (it was on loan) directly into my NAP 300, no pre-amp, I would say that that sounded a bit lifeless.

Presumably using the NDX2 inbuilt volume control?

If so, the Allegri will trounce it

Hi Simon,

yes, I tried it using the NDX2 volume control, in my system it sounded better when feeding the signal through my SuperUniti acting as a preamp only.

As you might expect, the NDX2 probably wasn't shown in its best light when played through the SU. I have tried a demo of the 282 + HiCap + NAPSC but i didn't think the 3 extra boxes worthwhile. Hence my interest in a simple one-box Preamp.
